- Short reminders about the ‘‘animal model’’ definition and related quality control
Part 1 (with main focus on rodents)
- Impact of environmental factors on behaviour and physiological needs
- Control and adequacy of required macro and micro-environmental conditions
- Key rodent characteristics and potential experimental interferences:
- Examples of neurosensorial characteristics: vision / light cycle and intensity, audition (sounds and ultra-sounds), olfaction / pheromons,
- Basal metabolic level, thermoregulation et thermo-neutrality zon
- Post-natal development (immunity, reproduction), ageing
- Sensitivity to macro et micro-environnement
- Social interactions and communication
- Diet and feeding
- Microbiote impact
Part 2 (most species, except aquatics / amphibians)
- Roles and responsibilities in environmental enrichment
- Through real-life situations, review of species-specific examples of environmental enrichment and their relevance : structural enrichment, feed enrichment, bedding / subtrate, manipulanda and toys, sensorial stimulation, socialisation and social interactions (conspecific / specific), positive reinforcement / habituation
- Assessing and managing requirements perceived as conflictual between animal welfare and good research practices
- Review of benefits and overall ‘‘return on investment’’ for animal welfare, 3Rs, R&D performance (quality of data / studies, outcome of projects / procedures), impact on personnel (OHS, work conditions, job motivation…)
