Contenu de l'intervention

  • Introduction, review of participant expectations
  • Short reminders  about the ‘‘animal model’’ definition and related quality control

Part 1 (with main focus on rodents)

  • Impact of environmental factors on behaviour and physiological needs
  • Control and adequacy of required macro and micro-environmental conditions
  • Key rodent characteristics and potential experimental interferences:
  • Examples of neurosensorial characteristics: vision / light cycle and intensity, audition (sounds and ultra-sounds), olfaction / pheromons,
  • Basal metabolic level, thermoregulation et thermo-neutrality zon
  • Post-natal development (immunity, reproduction), ageing
  • Sensitivity to macro et micro-environnement
  • Social interactions and communication
  • Diet and feeding
  • Microbiote impact

Part 2 (most species, except aquatics / amphibians)

  • Roles and responsibilities in environmental enrichment
  • Through real-life situations, review of species-specific examples of environmental enrichment and their relevance : structural enrichment, feed enrichment, bedding / subtrate, manipulanda and toys, sensorial stimulation, socialisation and social interactions (conspecific / specific), positive reinforcement / habituation
  • Assessing and managing requirements perceived as conflictual between animal welfare and good research practices
  • Review of benefits and overall ‘‘return on investment’’  for animal welfare, 3Rs, R&D performance (quality of data / studies, outcome of projects / procedures), impact on personnel (OHS, work conditions, job motivation…)
